Smith Machines

Smith machines were originally invented by Jack LaLanne, but improved by Rudy Smith, after whom the machine was named. Barbells are hooked in a series of slots on the runner, depending on the exercise planned. Exercises such as squats are safer, thanks to these slots, which allow lifters to work without a spotter. Various machines include further safety features such as adjustable pegs or blocks to automatically stop the barbell at a height set by the lifter. The increased stability provided by runners and counterweights allows less stable lifters to increase the weight lifted without risking their safety due to instability issues. The barbells on Smith machines cannot shift or fall forwards, to the sides, or backwards, providing safety as well as the stability needed for proper form. Smith machines take up less floor space than traditional benches and other equipment, while providing safe options for bench presses, squats, lunges, chest presses, and other strength-building exercises.
